Health Training Package HLT07 – Version 4.0 released

New units of competency added to the Training Package

Newly endorsed units of competency have been incorporated in both the HLT07 Health and CHC08 Community Services Training Package:

  • Seven new units in the area of oral health
    • The units reflect seven oral health functions that could be performed by community services and health workers
  • Four new units in the area of Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN).
    • Three units of competency to articulate functions of Volunteer Literacy Tutors; and
    • One unit of competency to articulate functions of community services workers working with clients with language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) needs
  • One new unit in the area of mental health
    • The newly developed unit provides the necessary skills and knowledge required by workers in community services and health settings to work in a consumer directed and oriented way with consumers who are living with a mental illness. The unit would apply to a range of job roles across the community services and health industries, who may not have been trained to work with people with mental health issues

Changes made to units that affect competency outcome

Enhancements were made to particular Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) units. The following changes have been made to them in HLT07 (Version 4):

  • Broader reference to hazards
  • Removal of pre-requisites
    • Examination of the units indicated that it was inappropriate to cite HLTOHS300A as a pre-requisite for HLTOHS400A, HLTOHS500A and HLTOHS600A
    • It is considered that the content of HLTOHS300A is embedded in each of these units
    • In order to ensure this is clear, the item titled ‘Related units' in the Evidence Guide of each of these units includes the statement:
  • ‘Assessment of this unit should address and build on the content of related unit HLTOHS300A Contribute to OHS processes'
  • Language of HLTOHS300A has been revised to ensure it can apply to work as a sole practitioner as well as work within organisations.

Other changes which are also reflected in the new versions of the Training Packages include:

Updating imported units
Imported units across all qualifications in HLT07 Health and CHC08 Community Services Training Packages have been updated to reflect current versions.

NQC flexibility requirements

The NQC packaging rules requirements specify that qualifications not granted exemption or exception must:

  • Include a minimum number of electives for each qualification:
  • One third or more of the total number of units required to gain a qualification must be electives
  • Allow a broader choice of electives:
  • One sixth of the total units must be able to be selected from ‘other qualifications in the same Training Package, other Training Packages and accredited courses'
  • In consultation with industry stakeholders and under the guidance of the Training Package Advisory Committees (TPACs), qualifications have been repackaged to ensure compliance with the above requirements.

Embedding Skills for Sustainability

Skills for sustainability have been embedded across a number of units in the Training Package, as well as units of competency from the Business Services Training Package included as electives in a number of qualifications where appropriate.

Other minor changes

Changes to terminology in line with policy requirements as well as minor changes in response to stakeholder consultation which do not affect competency outcome are also reflected.

New versions of the Training Packages will be available on the NTIS website in the coming weeks. Please refer to the version modification history in Volume 1 for each Training Package for details of the changes.
